This the the first section that students will be taking when testing TOEFL(iBT) exam. It's very important for students to do well in this section because it will build up the confidence level of the student for the remaining sections. Let's take a look on these four possible question types : 1)Main idea: Students are asked to identity what the main idea of the passage or mainly about--that is to distinguish the principle context from the supporting points/material/reasons/facts/examples. 2)Inference: Questions focus on the implied meaning of some aspect of the passage; that is, they ask the reader to read the hidden massage beyond what is actually stated in the text. The words "infer" and "imply" frequently occur in such questions. 3)Specific information: This is the largest portion of questions and also the most varied in format. "According to the passage..." is often used to ask the reader to identify certain information from the passage, or ask where a particular piece of information or particular writing process occurs. These questions sometimes consist an element of inference or restatement. 4)Reference: The reader is asked to search the referent for a particular word (this is usually a pronoun, such as he/she or this/that) or expression in the text. It is estimated to have 15% of the questions are usually directly concerned with this aspect of reading.
